In early evening after the sun goes down, all of my koi gather together in a particular area and settle near the bottom. The time of year does not matter. When the moon comes out, they can be seen swimming, nibbling on algae and generally moving around all areas of the pond, albeit slowly. I do not have lights near the pond. When it is dark without the moon, a flashlight is needed to see what they are doing... and it's not much in the pitch black. (The flashlight disturbs them.) With even pale moonlight, they move about. .... Perhaps your gal prefers a bit more light than the others.
