In the days of BK (Before Koi) I was off into Houston running errands for the farm where I worked (4000 acres of catfish). Well, nobody keeping rack of me, I stopped into the pet shop nearby one of my stops. They had this fish in there, a "fire eel" it was beautiful and I had to have it. No cash, I paid with the card, $65.
Came home and put the fish in my 150 gallon tank, it went right under the gravel with only its nose visible. I pretty much forgot about it other than at feeding time.
A few weeks later I'm watching tv when my wife hollers from the dining room table, "What is a fire eel?" Weird, off the wall question, I say, "Its this cool fish." "$65 worth of cool??? I don;t think so."
Nowadays...."Bought me a new kohaku from Shigeru for $8500."
She says, "That's nice dear."
