Happy year of the Monkey,everyone!
The term bonsai koi is heard occassionally these days. It was prevelant
more in Japan 10-15 years ago where economics and space along with an effort by producers to expand thier market, encouraged people to keep koi small. it was accomplished by fairly crowded conditions minimal feeding and the use of males who would finish quicker. water quality did have to be at it's best.
Those who developed the art were able to keep koi with almost no growth what so ever. I can't remember a whole lot of details, I recall the
temp band was quite controlled and narrow. the fun for those participating was to knock off baby grand and repeat the next year with ther same koi!
It was a trend, like having giant koi now. like all things, the pendulum swings wide each way while the majority centers in the middle!
Are you thinking of monkeying around with art ths year?
