These filters aren't fancy, but they were very simple to make and they work. These are up-flow filters, and each is filled with matala, commercial pond filter pads, bio-balls, and other media I had laying around. I saw a similar setup at one of the local koi farms I visit from time to time. I'm not sure what bio-load this filter can handle, but it should do the job for the 1,000-gallon holding/sale ponds I've constructed -- provided I don't overstock, overfeed, and am dilligent about water changes, etc...
