| I have a suggestion for checking the accuracy of a scale. Three actually.
1) You can have a friend who works for the county checking weights and measures for retail sales scales who will test your scale using scientific level gram calibration weights. 2) you can check with your local high school's science teachers and ask if they have calibration weights they will let you check your scale with in their lab under their supervision.
3) or you can also check them with food. Yes, food scales used for retail sales are frequently checked for accuracy. At a slow time in a meat department, ask a clerk to weight up an amount of hamburger (say 1/2 lb or so), check the scale so you can compare it to the price tag weight (should be), then use that purchase to see how close your scale comes. Be sure and only use the meat and wrappings that were placed on the scale.
I have a friend who checked my scale and then I double checked with a hamburger purchase. (straight from the store to home and checked) Both were right on. I have had the scale checked again about 2 years later and found it to not have changed. I suppose that if it were transported a lot and banged about it should be checked more often.
