| First they are two different genus and species....definitely not the same animal at all. A goldfish, expeically the fancytails, are relatively small fish (up to 8") that do not need deep water and significant current.
On the other hand, koi are riverrine carp that can group to 36" or more. They do best in an enviromnet that is more like a river...deep water, lots of water (per fish), and current.
IMHO you can not build one pond system that really addresses those very different types of fish. If you want a water garden...stick with goldies. If you have the time, space, and budget for a large, deep pond (at least 6')...go for koi.
Join local clubs, borrow books from members, purchase books from Amazon...etc. Make a informed choice about which is best for your own particular situation.
