Welcome to a land where you're not expected to look out for yourself! Don't get me started on pedestrians and scooters...I'll rant on all night!
Seriously, make sure that you give pedestrians and (motor)bikes here the right of way always, regardless of how idiotic they may act. If you hit one, you are always at fault if you are in a car. Always! Feel free to roll down the window and yell at the ones that pull the exceptional stunts. You may shock a few of them and give them the common sense that
may save their life one day.
On the other hand, revel in the fact that you are "out in the sticks" by Tokyo standards. You've not seen anything until you're in Tokyo proper with regards to narrow roads and looney pedestrians!
