There is a difference between a sterilizer and clarifier. A clarifier is wider for more water flow. It is essentially the same thing, but a sterilizer is better for killing pathogens(less flow and more contact time). A clarifier is really for killing algae and clearing the water. I had an expensive aqua ultraviolet unit and it was a pain in the butt. The glass broke on several occasions and I had problems when changing the bulbs...and it shorted on me. I now use a tetra 3, 40 watt unit. It is cheaper and has worked well for 4 yrs now. No green algae.. and takes 4000gal/hr of flow. I'll stick with my cheap UV!! I change the bulb yearly as directed.
