James, I could not agree more with your comment about the clear water/water quality thing. I always let my water turn green and had not used my uv unit for three years (untill I needed to catch the koi of a friend whose koi where staying in my pond because he was building a new one).
About ten years ago sandfilters were used by koi keepers overhere. But they have fallen from grace long ago. Ozon was introduced back then, was seen as high tech, but expensive to buy and people were reluctant because of the poisonous nature of O3.
Over the last 2 or 3 years, ozon has made a comback for two reasons.
1 Aiding biological filtering systems because of overstocked ponds (small country, small gardesn, small ponds).
2 lowering the TDS to have better growth/development of koi.
The redox meters are used to regulate the ozon unit as to not make the water "sterile"
