| seine net
In addition to using a proper koi net, you may want to invest in a seine net. The seine net isn't used to catch the fish, but it does corral them into a smaller area of the pond. When catching a koi, you don't lift it out of the water in the net (unless it is a sock net that holds water). It should be transfered from the flat pan net to a bowl or bucket. You also don't want to chase the koi - which is where the Zen art of catching them comes into play.
The best flat pan nets are from Japan and have a lightweight woodor bamboo handle. I have a less expensive version with an aluminium handle. It is heavier and a bit slower, but I don't use it often or for long periods of time.
Best of luck!
