In theory, this system should never have to be totaly cleaned. Bacteria rich colonies living in sand substrate among other critters, will proliferate with air-entrained water being circulated through out water levels and sand so as to eliminate any stagnant areas. And, being an internal filter system, allows small fish populations the ability to graze and hunt food as part of the normal food-chain process. So why not let fish enjoy feeding on filter system food chain creatures?
Whats with all the aspect talk? I don't know.
My aquarium works like this to some extent and very well. There have been some attempts to do this filter on a large pond scale, but koi being so messy, the population of fish kept is key here, I think, and this aspect of the aspect above.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to raise shrimp and koi in same pond.
