There is a hotel in Isawa that I have been to using this "system". The water was not deep (~2'), and the koi all looked very healthy. Unusual for a shallow system that I have seen at many other hotels, where the koi looked decidedly unhealthy, with ulcers, conformation probs, skin dull, etc etc.
So there is something to it, IMHO.
