having read the NI board...

everyone must be kidding... how much flow thru would a fish cause, even if such "gravel" were to float a few seconds due to a tail flick? anyhow, the material has to be heavy enough so the pump/current doesn't displace it, so how light could it be? ridiculous! it is what it is, someone even said it could be aluminum based media. now that's grasping at straws.

this discussion has now entered the realm of a "secret" type of fluidized media bed, are we back to debating a Sakai "bacteria house" that no one has seen? the patent does not specify (thereby does not cover) media, except in general size (~5mm). by all means, please restrain your imaginations!
