Mind if I use this definition with some local newbies as the need arises? That is the best, yet simplest form of describing patterning I think I ever heard, and I've heard and used lots myself.

Joe used the word "maruten" which describes a separate red marking on the head of a koi, just like "tancho" except there are additional markings on the body as well, e.g. - maruten kohaku, maruten three-step sanke just to name a couple.
