After stirring up a pond it can take several days for everything to settle down. Skin irritations make them uncomfortable and having you in the pond is something they are not accustomed to. It takes my kio a few days to calm down and become trusting again after netting one or two for inspection or picture taking, but once they do everything is fine.
Changes in the weather can also influence how energetic they are and how deep in the water they want to swim.
