Russell said bacteria slow down. That means that the filtration declines and cannot do the work it was able to do at higher temps. There are many bacteria with different roles within the complex, mature system and this would even include bacteria adapted to the lower temps of the north.

Common advice is that food quantity should be tapered off starting at 65F, and that food type be switched over to wheatgerm based foods starting then also. At 50F feeding stops. Do not try to fatten them up now with heavy feedings.

It's nice to see that you've gotten your pond going again. Your open reception of the comments made here is a testement to your desire to do well. After creating QT facility maybe you can do a little upgrading in the future like Nancy said. Dick has suggested a very cool place to do a little shopping.
