Well, certainly a white head is needed on all show winners! But the size can definitely vary. Think about it steve- a huge tancho can weigh down a slim tosai and make it look very 'front heavy'. In addition, the head is rather small and the skin rather thin on a baby.. ( 'brain pan' can even be seen). So 'cute' is a more likely word that will come to your lips than 'powerful'.

If you judge with a Japanese breeder and the beni is not thick on a tancho- no matter what the shape of the circle, that fish is 'outa there'. This is an interesting moment- when you realize that a Japanese breeder judge is all about soundness of stock and not the artistry at the expense of potentially passed on genetic weakness in the form of poor beni. Since so many of these tancho spots are 'helped with scaple and winter work' only the nature of the quality is true and dependable in the end.
