Aeration of bio-filters is too often taken as "oxygenation" for the nitrifiers. It is that, but even more importantly, violent aeration keeps the filter clean and increases the chance of "food" getting close enough to the baceria (as you so well reminded everybody).
This another reason why Kaldnes K-1 is so effective: with the abundant aeration, water moves around more as described above, and since the media also moves, the chance of nitrgen-bateria contact is increased many folds.
This is not an encouragement for all to convert to K-1, this media has other drawbacks (that when well understood help circumvent them somewhat).
