Shiro babies inmvolved in the act of sembetsu are retained at 3 days old as black instead of yellow. If the window of opportinity is missed, those koi showing black and white are retained including basic shiro muji's with some black smudging.
Since most modern day shiro utsuri breedings are from showa background, red in small amounts can be an indication of better black. usually within the first 2 years of growth that red will go orange, then yellow, then gone. But you don't want to take this 2-3 year old put it in a pond of gosanke and feed color!
Probably of all my home breds over the years I've had the best sucess with shiro.
