Right you are! Fry is an English term. Fingerling is another. These are descriptive words to describe stages of development more than references to age.
In a more science oriented observation of koi/carp we have :
1) egg
2) larvae ( hatched but with yolk sac attached. A three or four day life form. All organs are not fully formed)
3) fry ( the hunting stage where active predation begins/happens as the organs all work for normal function)
4) Juvenile koi- all pre-sexually mature fish
5) mature koi- adult koi capable of reproduction.
