First, in regard to your questions: Look for strong, even body lines; well-shaped pectorals; and absence of scars... and a color shade you like. For a small Chagoi, prices will vary widely... maybe $20 for a decent tosai. For a 30" scar-free Chag, add a couple of zeros. I cannot say whether the so-called green Chagoi grow larger on average. There are enough 36" brown Chags around to make me doubt that notion. However, there is something of a preference for the lighter toned Chagoi, since they show better in a pond.

Next... as a very new 'newb', are you prepared to raise and care for a fish that will become so large and weigh as much as many dogs? Chagoi may be hardier than a highly refined Kohaku, but the requirements for a carp destined to grow large require both the facilities and skill that match the size of the fish.
