Yes Dick, a very substantial hardwood. I would guess Iroko.

Why would wood be the last thing? Many traditional Japanese ponds have wood in the water, very much a common site are timber logs, placed vertically, partly submerged.

I'm pretty sure your answer will be along the lines of possible contaminants and I'm sure some timbers may not be suitable, but it would appear some are.
