Hi Steve N., I believe that these are all pixs of the same shiro. I also agree with Steve S. in that there has to be some developed sumi somewhere, especially on the pecs. Since there are no evident developed sumi, I would look at bloodline and the parent stock to predict its development. Also, sumi development is dependent on diet & water quality as well.
Similar to Steve S., I have also shied away from buying tosai b/c of male/female unpredictability along with development uncertainty. While one has to start somewhere and tosai can be a good learning tool, I am starting to grasp what others are saying about how they would rather buy one/two good nisai than a bunch of tosai.
