The point is that soil when it is wet can turn to mud and then slide to lower levels such as the bottom of a pond. The water inside the liner will give way and let the mud slide on down.

That is why a deep pond in soil using liner should be on very well packed soil and then have good dranage so that the walls behind the liner don't create a mud slide.
