I get several "layover" calls every winter and have found that gradually raising the water temperature on these fish results in far fewer deaths and complications. Now admittedly, many of the pond owners don't notice that their fish are listing until the fish are in dire straights (hard to keep track of the fish's condition under a thick layer of ice) and this impedes the fish's resilience.

I use JR's recommedation regarding filling the QT with chilly pond water and allowing it to very slowly come to room temperature. However, the QT must be very large or the heating is too rapid and must be slowed with cooler water or the periodic addition of some ice.
