Do you think koi 'learn'? Is it possible she will remember the pain from the skimmer and stay clear in the future? Hope your fish recovers.

I have a big Laguna skimmer filter which comes with a bouncing, clacking ugly salmon-colored baffle in the salmon interior. I couldn't understand what the Hagen designers were thinking with that hideous color, and wondered if the bright color was to make koi think it is the maw of a larger fish. But when I removed the baffle, I had two koi who liked to hang out in the large skimmer and eat food from the matala or turn facing out and let the food float right into their mouths (the pump was undersized so there was no trouble for them to swim in and out at will).

This summer, however, there will be a new pump 4x as strong so the baffle is going back in. (The pond redo now has the skimmer opening facing away from the deck so I don't have to look at the nasty thing.) I kinda like the idea of wedging a cross bar or two of PVC in the opening, though, as the baffle is noisy.
