I've had it for about a year now. I got it last winter and kept it in an overcrowded, but heated, inside 150g tank. The poor thing was barely 5" last winter and couldn't/wouldn't compete with larger fish for food. A very shy fish that way.
In the inside tank the red started fading. Once outside all summer (and outside this winter) the red strengthened and the fish became bolder near the end of summer. The colors overall became stronger and the red crept up a little, but not too much. The red did reach the eyes at the end of summer -- that picture was taken in October. Still relatively shy; doesn't hand feed and still doesn't eat aggressively.
Breeder: wish I knew. I was given this fish to babysit for a fellow hobbyist and it has since become mine. I was told it was a top tosai from some japanese breeder. It was imported by Sacramento Koi.
I still don't know if it is male or female. Next year will be particularly interesting for this fish.
