Mike,

Why aren't you installing a vortex before your bakki' showers?

....ideal settlement tanks.

It is what I am going to do.

Hi Lee. When you get everything done, you have to post pics. Something tells me it is going to be more grand than your understatements let on.

I do not have Bakki. Sorry to confuse you. I was just making a suggestion for BobH to consider.

At AFKAPS I had a chance to talk with Carl F (Keirin Koi) and he was quite clear: He recommends Bakki Showers always be preceded by mechanical filtration. In fact in the best of all worlds he'd have the BS come at the end of what we might consider a fairly complete system. He explained that an outdoor koi pond is completely different environment than one in a shaded greenhouse where low densities exist and algae is low. In many respects, his preferred arrangement makes the BS system a trickle tower/de-gassing/aeration combo.

By the way, I'm told the one he installed on a local pond 2 weeks ago has already resulted in remarkably improved water quality. I've not had a chance to pay a visit to see for myself.

Mike/Lee,

Fully agree a vortex up front is the way to go. In my situation I was 'adding' a Bakki and if I put the suction/pumps after the Vortex, there will be 7500 Gallons per hour going through the Vortex. It goes at a fair speed at the momonet and is probably a bit undersized, but I have a brush chamber afterwards for taking out anything that gets through.

I'm going to have to have a bit of a rethink anyway, so potentially could give the post-vortex set-up a go.

Tomorrow I start helping to dig/concret/build-walls for a friend of mine, so will be pretty busy for a few weeks, if not longer. So it will have to remain as it is for now, with a bit of cleaning out I'm sure it will run OK.

I think what was meant was a PRE-vortex, not a post vortex. Yes?

Of course, you spoke to the guys fro Kerin, as I also spoke to the same good guys from Kerin also, at AFKAPS and had near the very same conversation as your own...and, same answer and response.

And....

Yes, my own pond. Is out of control. Far out of control.

However, if anyone is to blame it is people like yourselves, Griff, Dr. Rod and Steve the famed very talented, Mr. KoiBoy, Doug, Dale and a host of others whose face's will only blush bright red when they are herein named...

Yep, there I was minding my own business and working myself into an early grave when these koi minded culprits; and, others similarly evil minded, planted the idea of another 'even' larger pond into my head, choosing to make it all sound fun and exciting. Perhaps, even interesting?

And, being a weak minded individual, as most of us in this hobby are, I was swayed by their forked tongues and off I went...hiring an excavator.

Now, there is no end in sight. No solution. No known contractor wanting to complete this work.

One possible who has now twice delayed our second meeting...and, myself (too old, too worn, too busy and too mechanically deficient to do this work on my own!)

Alas, there will be more filtration within this pond than exists at either the Monterey and/or The Shedd Aquarium - combined.

Of course, no fish...only water, however, by then the water will be chemistry school perfect...but, the bank account will be empty!

And, if I knew how to post photos, darn it, I would.

Or, if you want to send me your e-mail, I would be only too happy to provide you those pix's I have in file...so that you can see (for yourself) what these terribly demented and troubled koi folks have caused me to try to complete.

All the best,

Lee

Was reading the list of those that contributed to your delinquency Lee and was relieved to see my name was not included!
I need to save some more coin of the realm to buy more BH media.
I should have the trays done in about 3 weeks at the rate things are going. They will have egg crate bottom trays in a stainless shell. My
trays will run after A BB mechanically removes the waste. I started with the media submerged and heavily aireated but want to have it in the trays
so I will switch them over. the media as it is precedes my jap matt and follows a settling vortex that is emptied twice a day. my water quality before I was happy with. I don't know if it's my imagination or not but the koi's appetite has definetly improved marketly shortly after it was added.
The article in issue 6 from the UK doesn't leave anything to the imagination as if this stuff works or not! will be interested in getting back more reports from far flung places ( like yours Lee!) once more people get it up and running we'll get a better picture.
it up and running!

What article in what issue six?

And, the sole reason I failed to name you personally, was only to protect you!

Be happy.

Lee,

thanks for the protection!

Well, when you need a friend, it's important to know that you've someone out there watching out for you, yes?

issue 6 of kb, the 80 cm quest.

My problem in not knowing is that my KB's arrive some weeks after you receive yours...sometimes, months afterwards. I assume this is an issue, that I have not yet received?

Bunch of crazed koi kichi's that buy
momotaro's koi and filter system and food .

Aren't we all crazy within this hobby?

as a north american, i watch what the japanese do and the brits and you and i'm thinking i have to move to an island to get it right.

I don't know how to reply to that question.

We've undoubtedly too many American's here now. Probably, another NA would sink our island!

However, if you'd come for a visit and choose to stay at my home and talk koi for 48 straight hours...plan your 48 hour visit, soon!

whatcha think?

"What's to think???"

JR: As Brady says, yep.

I have been too backlogged with work to go visit the Bakki Showers set up locally. Need to find time to do that. HenryC has paid a few visits and probably has the most up to date info on improvement in water quality, if only visual. The system is fully installed on 2 ponds of a local koikeeper who is not mechanically oriented, who has little time for maintenance chores, somewhat above average (by local standards) pre-existing filter system that falls far short of "state of the art", and quality fish. In other words, ponds that need improvement to match the quality of the fish and low maintenance to match the schedule of the keeper. I am expecting the BS system to make a dramatic improvement as the final stage of the filtration system. A trickle tower might do just as well, but in this situation, I'm thinking the de-gassing effect will be very beneficial. I remain concerned about algae growth when exposed to sun, and the chilling effect if operated in winter .... around here, that's when we have a 40F night following an 85F daytime high.
