Lee,
you have a great sense of humor. i really would love to talk koi 48 hrs
non stop!
I remember when sister NW state Oregon a few years back had billboards that said welcome to oregon and be sure and leave after your visit. had to laugh when i read your remarks.
I think we ought to ask Brian real nice if he could post on his board an article from his current issue so that koi kichi's like yourself in far flung places could have something to read while they await arrival of the magazine. hang in there!

As MikeM mentioned, I have been over to the local pond owner's home that had Bakki showers installed. I have been over there many, many times in the last month (helping treat Koi). I was amazed at how much better the water looked after just a few days with the Bakki showers running. There is a chance though that the addition of another type of filter could have done the same thing. These were not a replacement, they were in addition to existing filtration, which was borderline for the ponds.

Now that the ponds have sufficient filtration, the health problems have subsided. My last visit was on Saturday to check on a Koi many of you have now seen (page 6 in the latest Koi-Bito, 40bu champ). It had injured one of its pecs. Before the filtration upgrades, it probably would have turned into a full blown infection, but now it just looked a little irritated.

Next time I go over, I'll get some photos of the Bakki showers.

Definitely Mike, don't under estimate the benefit of degassing and nitrogen/ammonia blow off in a good wet/dry system. Add traditional submerged design and you have the best of both worlds. JR

Orlando Bakki Showers

As promised, here are a few photos of the Bakki showers Koi by Keirin installed on a pair of ponds here in Orlando after AFKAPS.

The first shower is intalled on the Barroso's male pond. The pond previously had the skimmer feeding the stream that flowed back into the pond. They installed the shower at the top of the stream and just tied into the same plumbing, so this one is fed by the skimmer.

The other shower was installed on the female pond. Keirin also expanded the pond. The bottom drain from the new expansion feeds an Aquadyne 4.4 which is then pumped to the Bakki shower.

The shower was originally installed on top of the bog area at the top of the waterfall, but it blocked the view of the fern, so it was moved behind the fence.

They had to build a platform so that the shower was high enough to flow back to the waterfall. The first thing I did was shake the heck out of it. It is very sturdy.

Henry,

Great pictures and explanations, all set up on what looks like some great ponds. Obviously a bit warmer where these ponds are than the UK!

SMG: You have been giving away tidbits of info on your "not-Bakki Showers" crate & lava rock experiment on another board. Ready to give us an interim report? Any comparisons on BS media & lava rock?

Well, it is real Bakki Showers BH against Lava Rock in identical systems.

Here is the white, "yang" media with supposedly an active principal, and the dark, "yin", passive, humble Lava Rock. Both systems will have a shock load of fish dropped on them this weekend.

I was interested only in what happens to the DOCs and the poop. After all the hoopla, I will be testing for the ammonia cycle progression also. Of course, toxicity will be locked up with chloramX and salt.

Here is one of the Bakki Showers up and running. I have never drilled so many holes in a spraybar in my life.
