I see. Then the 300kg per 10 tons is a number for a very high stocking density.

That makes sense. If you have more fish, add more media and filtration.

Thanks. I got the answer I am looking for. 300kg in a 10ton with high stocking. That is 10%. Look like 10kg is sufficient for me since my tank is real small. I am thinking of replacing my bio-balls in my TT with the BH.

Thanks to sundan for copying the momotro response to your questions. alot has changed since I first looked into the program . Does help to bring things into perspective. Since starting the hobby I have always tryed to emmulate what top japanese hobbyists are doing. that's why I have so few koi. In running my BS in addition to my j-mat with 6 koi, it (my water) continues to stay clear. the first day or two I had some floating
bubble patches like you see with DOC but it went away and has been fine since. the water temp stays the same but I can see a marked difference in the appetites, they're eating me out of house and home.

Lets ask Carl Forss why the difference in kilos per gallon recomendations between himself and Mr. Maeda.

Surely Carl wouldn't be selling out of the stuff if it didn't work in the ratio he is recommending.

Would like to share my encounters so far with Bakki shower. Still new, only a month into the process. Pond is 3500 gal, well over stock, 42 koi. Using a wave II 1/2 hp pump that is 8500 gal per hour, so I should be meeting requirements of BS. Pond is outside, but have heavy shade cloth 95% over pond. Live in Miami Fla. area so temp is not a problem. Using 10 boxes of Momotaro media. Within first week of BS, 0 readings of ammonnia, nitrite, very impressive, however, water clarity was poor. This is water from bottom drain straight to BS. Second week, water is pouring out over the top shower.

Pulled all the media out and to my surprise was about 1 inch of sludge around the container. Rinse media and try again. Within 14 days same thing happen again, so my conculsion was needed a prefilter. So , I install a 2.2 aquadyne bead filter. Now my koi club is really razzing me, cause I got the world's most expensive air shower, however something is going on, koi seem much more active, they are eating like little pigs. Water clarity has improve some, however still does not look like photos I have seen of Mike Snadden's site.

The media is now black on top with green algae, underneath, media is a golden brown color. Is everyone in agreement that this is proper of media levels of growth? How long does it take for media to truly establish? I have heard from 6 weeks to 4 months. With a prefilter that can handle 5000 gals and 10 boxes of BS media that can handle around 5000 gals, you would think I would have gin water, as of yet, has not happen. Water has a brown look to it.

I know what you thinking, check your well water. Well water is crystal clear, I even have a canister filter installed from well water. Well I am trying to keep the faith. I believe in Momotaro products, koi, see the DVD of him and his farm and it will make a believer of you. Any input, advise, would be of great importance. KOI KICHI!

Sundan

PS. Can someone explain infared ray radioactive of Momotaro media in plain English? His site has little info on this.

Bacteria House against Lava Rock Bakki Shower Test

I have been running two 3700 gallon identcal test systems for 16 days, same water, same fish load, same equipment. One has BH media stocked according to KoibyKeirin recomedations, and the other with the same amount of lava rock media. There are 10 large (27-29") koi in each tank.

Here is some history on the experiment. Both brand new tanks were filled with raw well water and allowed to mellow for a week. 5 large male koi and 5 large female koi of the same sizes were placed in both tanks, ammonia binder ChloramX and 60 pounds of salt added to each and the BH and LR showers turned on, turning these tanks over once per hour with 22 gallons per minute put over each top square foot in a four tray fall.

By the thrid day both tanks had a raging algae bloom. By day 4 the ammonia was .25 pmm in the BH tank and 1 ppm in the LR tank. By day 5 the ammonia was 1 ppm in the BH tank and 2 ppm in the LR tank. I can only explain this by noting the BH media is more open and in the mesh sided milk crates has perhaps better degassing than the more closely packed LR in the wet sections of these wet to dry filters.

On the night of the 5th day and the night of the 6th day the koi in both tanks spawned (full moon and romantic hotel) and most of the water was pumped out of both tanks and new well water pumped in on the 7th day and ammonia binder and salt replaced. Both tanks recieved once a daysmall feedings of the same amount of feed.

The second week, the ammonia held at 2 ppm in the BH and rose to 4 ppm in the LR. ORP was running about 40 mv higher on the BH tank at around 310 and the LR tank around 270.pH on BH around 8 and pH on LR around 8.4. At the end of the second week the BH ammonia rose to 4 ppm also and has help steady for the past several days. Water has remained turbid with algae and moderate amounts of DOC foam on each after initial large amounts . Samples of water are pending results for total dissolved organics compounds at a local water lab.

But today the readings have changed

Here is the BH tank.

Temp 74.7
ORP 240
pH 8.01
Ammonia 4 ppm (locked up)
Nitite 0
Nitrate 0

SMG: I'm wondering if the ammonia binder inhibits the de-gassing effect. I think it would (but do not have the chemistry degree to explain it properly). If that is correct, your incidental breeding may just give another clue that it is the moving of the water itself that contributes so materially, and not just the microbes.

The same amount of binder was/is in both.

Anything aded to one tank is added in equal amount to the other tank.
