SMG, I'm putting the water on the stove to boil and the bed sheets are being torn up as we speak! It won't be long now! You are seven or eight days late but with the algae bloom and the binders you are probably right on schedule! 48 hours now?! man, was I off calling last Friday-Sunday! Watch that nitrite, ignore everything else! JR

JR, These were traditional activities to get the menfolk out from underfoot.
I understand the boiling of water for sterilizing but what is the purpose of the tearing up the sheets? Breast binding to supress milk? These babies are not to be bottle fed!

Ruth, I use the electrode cleaner made by Oakton I get from AES then I soak them in the storage solution made by same overnight. It says on the instructions which came with the meters do not scrub with toothbrush.

Hi SMG,
Was wondering - we have a hanna meter and I don't really think you could get to the bulb part of the meter to scrub it any way (surrounded by metal JR). We keep getting strange readings on ours however - I need to contact Hanna again. But it sounds like you are cleaning it properly so your readings should be true. Interesting reading on the postings that you are doing.

SMG, I don't know? The Westerns I watched never actually went that much into detail- But I'm ready what ever happens! Course, the bed is ruined but hey- its for science! Watch how quickly the nitrite test goes to clear now- my favorite part! JR

Cleaning ORP

SMG:

Just a point of reference...

Both JR and I use Pinpoint ORP Monitors...unlike yours, American Marine Inc. recommends that electrode be cleaned every 3-4 weeks using a wet soft toothbrush w/long bristles...I've found that electrode needs to be cleaned every week...

Aloha! Mike

I have a Pinpoint also.

ORP meters can drive one insane. Brett says put several in the water you want to test and read the one closest to the middle reading!

I find the VS meters, like all meters, drift upwards in a few days. The two VS meters read within 10 points of each other when first cleaned, then one drifts up quickly, the other more slowly. I use one for pH and the other for ORP so all 5 test tanks are on the same page.
