Longterm, I'll have 7 x 50" extractor fans fitted, every other bay, but they will cost £1000 each with relevant extract loovers and temp control.

But for now, while money is short, I've just got to bear with it!!

Water today is 26.7c, outside is still under 20c. Sorry, can't work in F's for you American folk!

Maurice.
PS, for those who have not seen me lately, you get a good tan through polythene!!
PPS, I'm only a slight built chap, but according to my belt, I've lost 3" off my waiste this summer. Back down to 28", same size as when I was 14, but going to reach 50 this December!

Maurice,

I evey you - you have turned a hobby into what you earn a living from. I have been looking at your website alot recently and some great koi for sure.
My old man had his own buisness so i know what you mean about days off. The only full day off he had, was Xmas Day each year 1985 - 2003, and never off ill either. Semi reteired now.

Like your Kohaku especially. I am a while away from getting my pond completed just yet (three months???) and will be unheated this winter but will be looking to make a start in gathering my Koi collection next year.

Gonna have to add a Koi-UK Kohaku or Sanke in there. It will be interesting to see it develop alongside my Japanese bred Koi. I will be looking to amke a visit to see that impressive Koi farm of yours soon if that's OK.

Regards,

This may be a little off topic, but here are some links to some large swamp coolers Maurice, you should find a huge savings in electric and be way cooler if you use these rather than a massive fan in each bay.

Costs the same to run as a fan and cools to boot, perfect for greenhouse environments. Two or three of the larger units should keep you more than comfy, and one if you just want to cool the concrete pond end. Way cheaper than trying to push massive volumes of air and it will make it cooler.

If you decide to go this route which I would recommend you seriously consider, let me know as I have family in those industries and can get them at wholesale for you.

I think we all envy you to some extent, Maurice; but, I am too risk avoidant to ever follow your path.

About cooling things: Your temps may be as much your cause for success in growing those Chagoi as the Bakki Showers. BTW, in Orlando it is approx. 36C today... a degree above normal perhaps. Pond temp is approx 29C. Fish prefer below 27C. Air temps of 20C are winter daytime highs here... we think of that as pleasantly chilly. .... So many different environments to adjust to please the fish.

You mean shower media? There is ultra and lava rock, but they are not as good.

Why not build a shower, buy one box of bh at a time, and fill it with lava rock until you have enough bhm? Simple solution.

Part of the reason it is so expensive here is the shipping prices from Japan are outrageous. Costs close to as much to ship it as it does for the media. If we get a large enough group of folks together to make a fill a 20 foot container, shipping prices drop drastically.

The other alternative would be for someone to finance and build a BHM factory over here under Momotaro's supervision. That would reduce retail by almost half. The materials used to make BH and the processes are not cheap. Heating a kiln at 1300C for 60 hours is not cheap. Believe me, their profit margin on koi is way higher than it is on the media.

The media is really available to us westerners as a favor, especially considering how rude some of our lower level, immature, inexperienced psuedo scientists are towards their scientists.

More personal attacks, you piece of shit little hypocrite.

Edit: lock me for cursing, I don't care - I'm sick of this guy.

Double Edit: I know everyone is sick of seeing this crap, and I meant to send it to him as a PM, but it's out there now and I'm not gonna pretend like I didn't say it. Unlike George, I take responsibility for my statements.
