    Activities Open to the Public

For KIDS – “How to Raise and Care for Healthy Gold Fish in your Family Aquarium” This workshop was very popular last year. Each child was able to get their own goldfish; tank and initial food supply and learn the key factors in raising a healthy gold fish.

11:00 am 12:30 pm “What are the Key Factors in a Nutritionally Balanced Koi Diet for Koi”. Kodama Koi Farm of US will lead a workshop that highlights what they have learned about growing championship Koi over their year history. Translators will provide English translation.

1:30 pm – 3:30 pm “Key Factors in Breeding Koi” Joe Pawlak—Owner and President of Back Water Creek Farm will share his insights on koi. Joe Pawlak possesses degrees in Aquaculture and over three decades of experience in fish production, with an understanding of marketing both retail and wholesale. Joe’s longstanding relationship with his many Japanese Koi mentors allows Blackwater to offer the best American bred Koi, year round, at very competitive prices. With locations in central and northwestern Florida, Blackwater Creek Koi Farms is able to produce high quality Standard Fin Koi, Butterfly Koi and Goldfish, almost year round due to the 11 month growing season. The brood stock used can trace its lineage back to the original, high quality, fish imported from Japan and their own cultivated stock.

12:00 pm – 4:00 pm “Koi Show Judging” Throughout the afternoon the public will be able to watch the Japanese Judges as they go about the task of identifying the champion Koi. Public access to see all the tanks filled with Koi from across the United States with breeders and dealers coming from as far away as Florida, Iowa and California.

2:00 pm to 3:30 pm “Caring for Sick Koi” Dr. Tapper Born and raised in NYC, Dr. Tepper graduated from York College of CUNY in 1971. He then went to Europe to study veterinary medicine, graduating with honors from the Universite de Liege in Brussels, Belgium in 1976. Returning that year to NYC, he began practicing and held a special interest in birds and exotic animals. After many requests from clients, he opened the Long Island Fish Hospital in 1998 to care for the health of pet fish. Dr. Tepper has served as Treasurer of the International Association for Aquatic Animal Medicine, as an Officer on the Executive Board of the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association, and as a member of the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians, Association of Avian Veterinarians, the AVMA and state and local veterinary associations. In 2012, Dr. Tepper was named one of five Fellows of the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association.

With a special interest in ponds, water gardens and koi, Dr. Tepper developed a phytoremedial device for water quality improvement and received a U.S. patent for this invention, known as “Pond’toons”, these are currently in use in ponds, water gardens and in quarantine and treatment tanks for koi. Dr. Tepper will lead an extensive workshop on what are the critical signs of illness that you need to be vigilant about with your Koi and what are the important early steps you can take to prevent an illness from escalating.

No problem. I'm having a great time at the show and bought a very nice Shiro Utsuri from Kimmy.
