On the last asagi picture I asked Dan to post for me I was hopeful to get some comments. Non were given so i'll quit holding out and let you in on something. take a look at the tail especially in the first photo. the leading
ray is rolled (deformed). It's such a beautiful koi, one may not have picked up on it. that's the danger of buying off a photo from someone you may not have an established relationship with! this was a very expensive koi.....

Dick:

I did not notice the deformity until you pointed it out..what a shame.

I have one from Hosokai, the scalation is developing fairly nicely. Unfortunately, it is a male.

Even looking at it now, I still initially thought it was just a flick of the tail; not a deformity but simply that the tail was moving at the time.

But fins don't bend like that... ops:

Thanks Dick,
I did find them after Mark had responded, it really doesn't show on those photo's though so I guess that's why it wasn't commented on, is it more apparent in the flesh, as opposed to on the photo?

andrew,
probably would help greatly if the photo was 3x bigger. I had some pretty tough teachers in my learning years so i know what to look for. ie
tosai showas very easy to have crooked heads. hard to detect because of the patterns but it's the first thing you need to train yourself to look for.
anymore I look at any koi for the body shape, then skin quality then color and lastly pattern.

Dick: Thought you'd appreciate something from an old Japanese mag written by Takeo Kuroki:

"the greatest enjoyment to the advanced koi lovers is to keep several decent Asagi only in their ponds after the period [of having kept] Gosanke"

...but, what did that guy ever know, huh?
