Theron,
River water is not used, no way!
Well or bore water is, from many hundreds of feet down but river water, no.

I think the confusion comes in when Maeda says he has vast amounts of ground water from the river system. If you look around the area you see he has many mountains surrounding him. This creates a natural underground reservoir of hidded water from the rain, river and underground streams. All purified by the draining down through meters and meters of earth, gravel and stone. Here's a shot of the nearby passing river- Click to enlarge-enjoy. JR

Question for Mr Maeda

I understand when he was changing over to the new media and removed all his previous filter material and replaced with submerged bacteria house media, he also presser washed out the pond & filter bays

How did he go about introducing new filter bacteria and prevented new pond syndrome?

Thank you
Jenny

Kinda old thread but who cares....

My question today would be, how's business since the Niigata Quake? and will we be seeing alot of niigata breeders using Momotaro stock?

Also does some of the breeders have a so called "Old boys club" like Dainichi, I know their bloodline will never die considering they use some of the hobbyist koi to breed with.

thanks Mark! great idea!

When I think of his koi, I think of his ability to create growth ponds that positioned his and other breeders into a position of dominance in the all japan show.

what is is proportion of the number of koi to gallonage to achieve his record.

We all know of his work with sanke and kohaku to create his own beni type.
Besides the big three does he have any other plans to develop another color variety or create something new?

his ability as a cook and gracious host is well documented. Does he have a special receipe for one of his meals that he could share?

Dick,

Maeda had a play with Goshiki a few years back and has been dabbling with utsuri for two or three years now.
I think kujaku is also being considered.
As for recipes, I can tell you the beef steak he did for us, visit before last, was to die for! Superb!

Talking

If I ever got the chance to go to Japan I dont think I would want to come back as all the knowledge is their, and I think my first question would be can I stay and work with you, all the questions I would need answered would be if I got the job. I would be in a world of total bliss. I am a lady but it would not bother me in the least to jump in a mud pond full of koi and be able to crab em and look at the koi I could learn to cull and cull and cull and still I think I could do this 24 seven. "Total Heaven"

KFG,

I think if Maeda san gives us gaijin jobs to help around the farm, we would be thrown in to crab a lot of koi poop before given the opportunity to handle any of his fish...haha...sorry, just kidd'n about the crab.
