As I understand it, they set up the show on a variation of the English style, with not only separate tanks per owner, but also tanks arranged by size of the fish entered. So, a contestant might have multiple tanks in separate size groupings. Did I get that right? How did the participants like such a change?

I understand that most of the vats were booked by breeders who displayed fish from various owners.

So not only would an owners fish be scattered around the arena due to size but also via the breeders that look after his fish. Remember, Japanese hobbyists often leave their fish with the breeder for several years, as well take their fish back for a summer in mud ponds etc.

So for instance, owner X could have fish in the show in the Dainichi, Yamamatsu and Kazuto vats etc.

Brian, can you confirm?

Hi Folks,

It actually seemed like there was a bit of both going on! Breeders and hobbyists booked tanks. The Shinkokai had to place a special order for what must have been the smallest display vats I've ever seen in my life...they were tiny! I wish I had taken a pictures of these, but I didn't.

You folks aren't going to believe this, but smaller koi (20 cm and below, it looked like) were actually brought in and judged in plastic bags, and this was truly a spectacle to behold. This must have been for people that brought in too few entries to warrant their own vat.

Thanks Mike,

These weren't taken with my "big" camera either. Just some shots I took while casually checking the out the scene.
