Question for Kent; I have seen pictures of koi being held out of water by breeders. LOTS of pictures. On every cover of every magazine! I have seen Maeda holding fish out of water. I have proof that other dealers have seen fish out of water on many occasions. I believe it is possible to keep fish out of water for periods of times each day at home. Maybe if this is done, over time- we will not need to keep koi in water anymore. What do you think? JR

Dr. J's Article

Kent:

I also read the article, actually the quote is contained in his prescribed medications for one of the parasites, maybe tricodina...You'll have to go through each parasite to find it...

Also don't worry about JR and Doug, it's getting close to vacation time...They need a rest

JR have a good vacation in NC and watch out for the sharks, the ones that walk and the ones that swim...

Doug: Mondo Mondo!

Aloha! Mike

Its July 8 and my swim trunks are in the suitcase for an August 19th departure!

Now lets see, my head is spinning at this point---

we went from .6% salt in Japanese ponds at ALL TIMES, to-
.6% for resistant parasites due to Japanese practices-
to a Vet that remembers when he practiced on koi before Japan imported resistant fish!!!!!

OK I'll play along. JAPANESE KOI come from JAPAN, so I haven't a clue what Dr J was working on? The first koi show in the USA was 1974. I bought koi from Japan in 1985 and I was not near one of the first? Joe Zuritsky was importing koi via a stop in California in 1975. Lester Berkow was collecting Japanese koi in 1984. Ron Goforth has collected koi since 1978. Bob Finnegan has collected Japanese koi since 1976.
The KOI USA magazine was started in 1978 catering to the Japanese koi in Southern California. Even the old timer that Kent references dates back to those days.
So how do I reconcile these known facts against a Vet who says he treated koi before all these Japanese imports arrived??
Mmmmmm? I think he is about 46- 48 years old? Most folks graduate Vet school at about age 24-25. That would put him graduating in about 1983. Me thanks the statement is questionable.

JR:

Since you're skipping down memory lane here's one for you... In the mid 1960s, when I started my first pond and purchased my first koi, I visited a koi farm complete with mud ponds on the edge of Kaneohe Bay run by an old Japanese Gentleman who imported koi from Japan as his brood stock...While he bred and raised the Gosanke's I remember he had some killer clean Hi Utsuris, no specks, no broken patterns...

Well two weeks ago, at the seminar, I was having lunch with some friends and a young lady we had just met...I was telling my friends about this farm, when the young gal introduced herself as the grand daughter of the koi breeder...Talk about a small world...Unfortunately, a big developer bought the land, filled in the ponds and built a bunch of houses...

I also met your Mr. Bob Finnegan at the seminar, just before he kicked me out of the AKCA...Actually what he said was that "my kind", was not wanted or appreciated in the AKCA...All because I said I didn't want to show koi...Thank goodness, other judges said his remarks were BS...

Aloha! Mike

Sure Mike, you'll over there go back further than anyone- I think that Hawiian show was the very first amateur Japanese judged show outside Japan. In fact, I'm sure of it! 1964 Kuroki went to judge the Hawaii Goldfish and Carp Association. He noted in his writings that this association was formed in 1961. This was his inspiration for forming a National association from the regional organizations inside Japan.

Ask the old man if he saw a chubby white kid running around treating koi and complaining about how resistant the parasites were getting since the 'imports' began arriving ?! Maybe Erik's comments are true!

I'm surprised Bob was mean to you??? He's kinda the gentleman of the group! You MUST have pushed his 'passionate' button! LOL JR

Mr. JR:

According to the banner that was at the show, the club was formed in 1959...

Before he kicked me out, Mr. Finnegan told me some interesting stories about some of the members of the club when he came on the scene...

It was when I said " I've never met JR, but I think he's one of the good guys, and I respect his knowledge" that he went ballistic...

Actually, I also said that our philosophies differed a little in that I didn't think that everyone is suited to showing koi...and that lit his fuse...and I got the "YOUR KIND" speech...

Galen showed up about that time and smoothed things out...I did get the last word in though, I told Bob that he better settle down because I was not going to give him mouth to mouth if he had a heart attack...

A minute later he stood up too fast, from a kneeling position next to the judging tank, the blood rushed to his head, and he started staggering around...I thought Sh*t, now I have to go back on my word and start pumping his chest...I figured Galen could give him the mouth to mouth...Was kinda funny, but you had to be there...

The evening did end on a positive note, thanks to Dr. Hansen...

Since this thread is supposed to be about salt, I guess this is where I say "Bob Finnegan is a salty old curmudgeon”

Aloha! Mike

JR:

In the eastern tradition, when you save a person's life, you're responsible for them for life...

Since your teachings have saved my koi's life many times over, you're now responsible for them, unfortunately for you, I come along as part of the deal... When and What's for dinner?

Aloha! Mike
