Going over in November?

What's your itinerary, who are you traveling with, what are you going for?
ZNA show? fill us in. I don't get to go this year but i'm hopeful next fall. I want to visit my hero Toshio Sakai again.

Something for everybody, I guess. I loved the pics. Just one incredible koi after another. I can study them for hours ... and I do. I wish all show pics included the breeder. Then I could better learn traits I see recur etc. I assume the pics in #7 listing "Sakai Fish Farm (Hiroshima)" are likely Sakai-bred as well as owned, but not sure. Same for others that list breeder's farm names known to me. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with all the farm names to know the breeder name. Then, the entrant listing of "Masao Kato (Tochigi)" gives me no hint of the breeder. I really want to know who bred the Showa on page 53 entered by "Takefuji Yorijo (Kumamoto)" ... I realize "yorijo" indicates it is a business name, but who is it? I am not familiar with the name, but my first impression before I noted the name was Momotaro. Then I saw 57cm & 2 years old!! Look at that volume! That's a jumbo 2 year old. Then, above is another. .. not such grand motoguro, but caudal peduncle is THICK! Wow ... 58cm at 2 years. Who is this breeder?

I'd like to know about every single one of these grand koi. ... & maybe I'll strike gold some day and be willing to buy such art.

Hi Mike,

The breeder is "Takefuji", and Yorijo simply means "Koi Farm". Shuuichi (or Moriichi...Japanese names can have more than 1 reading :smt012 ) Takefuji is the name of the breeder, but I've yet to meet him personally. There seems to be a lot of interest in showa breeding in central Kyushu these days.

Although it's a mammoth task to compile that breeder data on all koi in shows (it's not included in entry forms for obvious reasons), the information for some of the koi can still be had by querying the owners or people that know. Obviously, you can't contact hundreds of people asking for the details though.

If there's any specific koi that you'd like details on, please post your queries here and I'll see what I can do. After all...that's one of the things that this board is for!

I am going to be on the look out for the Takefuji name. Certainly a lot of nice ones displayed by that farm. Makes me wonder about other high quality breeders who have not gotten known in U.S.

Trust me Mike, there's plenty of high-quality breeders in Japan that people in the US/UK don't know about, or don't know enough about. Keep your eyes peeled for some in future issues of KB.

That's a great show. The weather doesn't always co-operate but is worth going to see. Last time I was there was mesmerized by the opening ceremonial tyco drummers. You could feel every beat of the drums in your chest.

No Fair-you get to go to my hero's place without me! If you go to toshio's just remember there's more to him than go sanke. The guy never ceases to amaze me. Last time there I was in his office appreciating a grape bonsai with a full cluster of grapes on it!

I'm happy for you that this will be your first trip. Be prepared to be blown away by all that you see. This is the beginning of your education as to what can be in the hobby. Promise you'll write back with your impressions!
best (fishes) wishes!
