I wondered which Sakai was the breeder? I have a comment about the "heavier" hi 1st step that was mentioned earlier. IMHO, many of Toshio Sakai's kohakus have a very heavy first step, even bigger than this one. But if the beni is thick, they can often carry it off. Much as Dick said, the bigger the koi gets, the less one notices that. On a big koi, having the first step slightly bigger looks more even, if that makes sense. I have seen them the same size on big koi, and they look funny. You wouldnt think so until you see it in person.
Just a couple extra thoughts there.
