Koi from a mud pond.

Do koi taken from a mud pond have any treatments given to them or is it only done if a problem presents itself. Is any precautionary measures nessesary? What is most likely to be a problem with newly harvested koi of all ages?

I would guess there are different practices. Brian's Momotaro DVD showed a salt dip being used. An article in Rinko a dozen years ago referenced a dip in one ton of water using 0.5% salt, 0.5ppm methylene blue, 5ppm Furan (5g) and 1gram Masoten. .... seemed like a lot of stuff to me.

You sure have a wide range of knowledge on koi keeping.I too would be scared to put koi through such a chemical dip.

Jaco, I just harvest mine. Putting them into good water, waiting a day or so and treat if needed, but only if needed.

Seldom need to treat for anything staight from the mud pond if all's OK at harvest time.

Momotaro use a huge amount of salt, but I don't. At the moment I have found no need, but things may change?

Most koi in japan in the greenhouses from the mud ponds are treated to rid them of parasites.
It's pretty much a given that they will have them. They look like death warmed over for the first few days then start to come out of it.
I am in agreement with Maurice, that I treat with medicine or salt ( or anything) as needed.
