New born fry and low temperatures

I spawned one set of parents this past week and for the last two weeks the temps were between 30 and 35c during the day.
Now we are entering a cold spell with max temps as low as 15c during the day.
My question is would the fry survive such extremes? ( 4 days old )
They are in a mudpond at the moment but the pond is 3 feet deep and holds about 30 000 gallons so the temp could fluctuate to the low side.
I expect it to go as low as 15c in the mudpond this comming week.
What are their chances?

In that volume of water, the rate of change should not be a problem. You cannot cool off that much mass very quickly. However, I do not think they will develop well at 15C.

What is the subterranian temperature at 3 feet? If your ground temps have already warmed up, it will partially counteract the low air temperature for a few days. If the air goes to 15C (nights only?) for a day or so, the pond may not get that low. At 17C you would probably be fine.

The night temps forcasted goes as low as 6c min and 18c max.
I will just have to wait it out to know.

Every year a buddy that has quite a large wholesale business in the koi industry spawns some ponds on a trial basis earlier than he believes will be good for them...and these ponds on average outperform his "good time of the year to spawn" ponds.
Tells me that cool snaps might actually help koi fry AND that makes sense as koi spawn about as soon as things get right, and in nature things go up and down.

I saw some fry by the edge of the mud pond today and they seem strong and still very small.
They are from a Kikusui spawning and are white.
Will keep you informed by next weekend when everything has passed hopefully

Hi Jaco,
My experience has been that once the koi hatch they do alright until things warm up and they take off in growth. The only problems i have run across is when the eggs are spawned and the temp drops and I had no way of holding temps, I would loose the spawn. I would be surprised if you have any real loss at that temp!

Can't wait to see what this new pair delivers,will only be able to spot them after three weeks or so.

So how did the fry make out in the low temps?
Mine usually spawn in July but the fry are amazingly tough in their ponds. This year my early spawning was in mid June and they survived fine. I am sure we had nights that were 10 C or lower the daytime high would be 25 some days

Hi Sanke,

It seems Dick was right , once the fry have hatched they coped fine with the lower temps.
I will post some pics this weekend of them in the mudpond.They can be seen eating at the edges.
