The death toll now stands at 25, and as of 2pm today, there are still 1,700 residents in Yamakoshi that are awaiting evacuation with the assistance of the Japan SDF.

Brian

We have reports that there was a 2nd quake in Niigata in early hours of the morning your time. Can you shed any more light on this? CNN report a building collapsed in Niigata, don't know whether they mean City or Prefecture.

Mark,

There have been several aftershocks of over magnitude 5 on the Japanese scale (lower number compared to Richter), and the authorities are saying that we will continue to experience these over the next few days.

People making it back to Tokyo

I just had a phone call from my friend Olav Putyev of Holland. He managed to make it out with Alan Coogan and party through Nagano, and will be arriving in Tokyo shortly.

He said that Alan hasn't seen a bed in two days, and that they are knackered. I'm going up to meet Olav shortly to see if we can't arrange a room for them somehow.

Anyway, they're safe for those that are concerned about them.
