But having to breed these koi yourself has got to raise the bar on learning. I hadn't realized it had been as long as it had without any new bloodlines being injected. I think these two koi are really nice given everything they have to deal with! My hats off to ther breeder!

Thanks dick I will pass on the message to the breeder i am sure they will be happy to hear that what we are breeding out of our on backyards is not too far back from japan.

This year I am concentrating on the bakki showers and soft water and achieving growth rates never seen in Australia (in a way I have achieved it at growing past 1cm a week but there will still be scepticals saying lets see how they are a full growing season later). The sanke i posted came from sydney and had grown in a 90 tonne pond, it was far from being the largest there. Sydney has pretty low TDS tap water at around 120ppm but most ponds are around 320ppm.

here in WA many of our koi hobbyist had always thought that sydney hobbyist had better fish and now I know that is due to the softer water they have in sydney.

kois are actually quite cheap in comparison to the rest of the world as the markeet is not that big for eg the best kois whether jumbo or small would only fetch between 1000 to 4000 AUD. 95% of kois are sold at less than 1000 dollars
Cool, we have some true Koi Kichi hobbyist out there..The tosai are really nice!!! Better than most koi that come from Japan and labeled High Class. Well, if I had time on my hands I think I would try my luck at breeding. By the way what is the highest recorded price paid for a Nishikigoi out there?

This thread brings up an interesting question. What is the average price of koi? Sort of hard to fathom because the range of prices is so high. I've seen them retail for $1.49 US but have no idea where the maximum is, or even what you guys with nice fish are accustomed to paying. If a batch had:

1 fish worth $5000
10 fish worth $500
100 fish worth $50 and
1000 fish worth $5

then the average would be only $18
