Some pleasant news

Firstly my sympathy to all the japanese families that have lost loved ones in the quake, their homes and other family members that have been hurt in this ordeal.

Secondly I hope that many breeders in Niigata are able to pull through, though the loss of ponds parent stocks and top quality kois will surely set the industry back.

Now here is some good news for Aussie hobbyist anyway, there is hope for us to grow truly jumbo kois (japanese jumbo). On the 8th of Oct a sanke was placed into the tewa koi pond it measured 21cm (when pinned against the container). 2.5 weeks later it had grown 3cm to 24cm and put on a lot of girth.

What are the bloodlines of this Gosanke? What size is the pond? Nice Sanke and Kohaku!!!

Difficult times at the moment, but some nice growth on your Koi. Presume they are bred in Australia?

unfortunately i can't tell you the exact bloodline, no one in Australia can tell you the exact bloodline of their kois because we stop importing about thirty years ago. Some do claim that they have brought kois in to the country in the recent years and claim to be off dainichi and matsunosuke lines. How true it is no one knows.

These two kois were actually bred by backyard hobbyist. A lot of kois that are sold to keen hobbyist are from backyard breeders/hobbyist (big credit goes to all of them for the love of their hobby they go to extremes to try and improve their own collection. Unfortunately we don't have a scale of operation like momotaro and the kois will never be as good as theirs. I am astounded at the growth rate as it is only the start of the growing season where we have water temperatures constantly above 20 degrees.

Yes these are very troubled times and I hope the koi industry will bounce back from it. And yes these kois were bred in Australia by backyard hobbyist.

I understand that you can't import nishikigoi in to the country. My thought is why doesn't anyone import the eggs and milt instead of the whole koi. Well just something to think about.

Regulations, I am sure, would also cover the import of eggs, UK regs do, not for koi but for general movement of other aquatic life.

the government doesn't allow eggs and milt as well. trust me if we could do it legally we would

kois are actually quite cheap in comparison to the rest of the world as the markeet is not that big for eg the best kois whether jumbo or small would only fetch between 1000 to 4000 AUD. 95% of kois are sold at less than 1000 dollars
