I received this information this morning, from Japan

1.Seki: ( shiro Breeder) Hopless, he is in hospital
2.Igarashi:, 1/3 koi are alive
3.Yamajle Tanaka: 1 year old koi Hopeless, Sold koi seems OK.
4.Takano: All koi DEAD
5. Kase: All koi OK
6. Torazo: All koi ok
7. Shinoda: All koi dead
8. Jirosuke: koi surviving
9. Hosokai: Koi ok
10. Ofuch: koi ok
11. Otsuka: sold koi ok
12. Dainichi: home damaged, greenhouse damaged
13.Izumiya: damaged koi house, Lost many JUMBO
14. Hirasawa: Koi OK
15. Marudo: Lost all koi in greenhouse at home. Greenhouse across the street from house Ok, new greenhouse ok
16. Aoki: all koi ok
17. Isa: home and koi OK
18. Iwashita: 2 year old koi LOST, purchased koi surviving. without power still
19. Kaneko: Marlisho, Tanaka: UNKNOWN
20. Nogami: less damage
21. Yamazaki: house damaged, koi OK
22. Hasegawa: all koi dead
23. Tuna, masaki, miyatora: All Unknown

Hi Nancy,

Katsunori Miya (Miyatora) was actually on the TV news last night, and the house looked as if it can be rehabilitated, but the floor was flooded. His family was busy cleaning and mopping the mess up.

He definitely took some koi losses, but from what I can tell it didn't seem to be a total wipe-out. May take some time to recover, but I think they'll be able to continue on.

Kawaguchi-machi actually took the strongest of the tremors, and the cracks in the earth there are substantial...even though it is on mostly flat ground. Yamazaki is also in the area, so I imagine that he's been adversely affected as well.

Thanks for the update. Very sorry to hear of breeders completly wiped out, some very well known 'household' names there as well.

was the first i had gotten word of hasegawa. not what i wanted to hear but what I expected. Last time by his place he gave me a tour of his new house.

Hard for me to envision it anything but as it was-beautiful! I've seen alot of beautiful kohaku and this man sure new how to breed them!

Brian and others when I searched on the net for Nigata earthquake I found out that this is the third one since 1945 the others were devastating to the area too. Is the land cheaper there or what? The last one before this was in 1965. I guess what I am saying is do the residents of this area expect a earthquake every 20-30 yrs? I guess the koi business was not so developed in the mid 60's but the area seems to have a history of this sort of thing.

Seems land is expensive there. They might have the best soil to raise koi, but the soil there isn't the best, when an earthquake hits.

This is a good lesson for all koi keepers what is our emergency plan? How would we handle massive power outage or gas loss? In my area if the power is off for a couple of hours that is about the maximum so far but what would I do if it was off for a couple of days in winter or mid summer when demands are at the max.

Sanke56: It's all about being home.... transport all the people to another place and the community is gone. Californians all know their time will come.

Here in the Uk you can pick up a small generator for £45 + VAT I have 2 that would run enough pumps to maintain the filters and maintain air to the ponds and quarantine sytems. All I need to do is ensure I am around when it happens lol.

Jules, I always wondered what a "VAT" was? is it a tax? Kind of a stupid question, but need to know.
