Official koi owner!

Well I am an official koi owner now.

Dick, Thanks for all your help!

For all of you that have never met Dick in person let me tell you he is one stand up guy. I am very fortunate that he is in my local and generous enough to pass on some of his vast knowledge to a newbie.

And just for you ...

I have something new ....

And something blue ....

ps. She was very hard to get a picture of.

Welcome to the world koi-keeping. I am sure you'll get great enjoyment - not only from the pleasure of 'staring' at kois, of feeding, of showing off to others etc, but also of the hard work required to maintain the pond, the filter, to checking the water quality and so on.

And definitely koi is a never ending story that has been told, is still being told and going to be told, as can be shown in this Koi-Bito forum.

Welcome again FowlPlayFarm.

Welcome to the world of Koi or Nishikigoi to the lamers....You have done this most important thing in starting out that I can not stress more and that is to pair up with someone with knowledge....Suck that person dry for all the knowledge... Well, I wish you luck...I hope you have a enjoyable time like we all are having with our ponds...

I appreciate the kind words and most of all a great start for something Blue!

You will enjoy seeing the change. It'll be two more years before the asagi han

(blue) and the head turns white but when it does you will be able to enjoy

that koi! Just know thery are as wild as they get when it comes to netting and bowling so anticipate a jumper and develop patience! Lots of it.

I checked on my little guys i bred last year and was surprised to see how nice they are turning out. They're only 4-4 1/2 inches now but they look white and clean.

I got my hands on the #1 nisai bred by quality koi and it will end up in the mud ponds there for a growth season. The parents Mat is using were selected by Toshio Sakai. The last guy you'd think of for asagi! I'm excited!
I had some good friends of mine go back there for the draining of the ponds and they took belly and side shots for me to really see what was there.

I gotta tell you I can't wait for the next KB to come out!

Enjoy your koi and welcome to our world!

I cleaned up your photo a little FowlPlay, but don't know how to post it.
If there is nothing but a red 'X', you can find it here:

What do you think about this idea!

I made a couple of blank excell and word docs to keep records of my koi. I punch in the info when I get a new fish and I can then track changes in pattern, record injuries, treatments and the results so I can consult later. I also put in the initial impression of the koi so that if it turns out butt ugly I should be able to learn from my mistakes and further my koi selection, appreciation process.

Example (put into txt format):

Type: Koromo
Variety: Sumi-Goromo?
Pattern: Inazuma
Sex: ?
Size: 8.5 in. / 22cm
Breeder: ?
Dealer:
Price:
Date: 12-Nov-04
Inv. #: KORO-0001
Name:

Notes: Drawn to the Inazuma like pattern, pretty good balance although a little heavy especially on the left second third (hope it grows into the pattern), broken at base of dorsal fin, white intrusions over left eye. Good deep red, does not go into eyes, reaches to the lateral line on both sides. Black just starting to emerge, appears only in Hi now but may have some underlying Sumi in the forward third right in front of the dorsal, nice robed pattern, too much black in the Hi on the head but it is centered. Good tail stop, confirmation looks pretty good, white is ok at this point, clean pecs, a couple of metallic scales left side of dorsal. Might be a male.

(Picture installed here)

Inv. #: KORO-0001
Type: Koromo
Location: Q-tank
Date: 14-Nov-04
Size: 22 cm
Observations: Black disappearing, almost all red, stress? Started feeding today
Parameters O2-xx Ph-xx etc.

Inv. #: KORO-0001
Type: Koromo
Location: Q-tank
Date: 14-Nov-04
Size: 22 cm

Observations: Netted for picture, noticed small scrape on head, Called Dick B.

Inv. #: KORO-0001
Type: Koromo
Location: Q-tank
Date: 17-Nov-04
Size: 22 cm
Observations: black returning, dabbed with MG, watch for redness.
Parameters- Blah Blah blah
Etc.

To B Scott and Bekko. Thanks for the Asagi clean up and post.

Most of all his brothers and sisters look like the dad part of the asagi world as opposed to mom who is narumi. ( dad's gunjo)
