Ogata koi food, is availiable all over Germany, we have problem with Momotaro.

There isn't any Momotaro distributor in Germany, so you have to contact momotaro directly, to get any Momotaro products.

Momotaro food we can't even get. I last heard one of the dealers here was goin to get the receipe of the food and produce it locally. Either way I still think Ogata Wheatgrem is still the best...for the price and ingredients....

I'm using 15% of Hikari excel to 85% momotaro color food in the morning & 15% of Hikari excel to 85% momotaro white food at night. I like the results so far.
Twice a week I give my koi sweet potatoes to enhance their internal organ & skin. Tofu once a week cos it is high in calcium. Up to 85mg per 100g. Silk worm pupae once a week. Shrimp in small portion only as a snack once a week. They like shrimp very much cos everytime try to separate my finger from my hand when I give it to them.LOL.
Many high quality food are easy available in my country for e.g. momotaro, sakai, ogata, manda food, silk worm pupae etc.
Various Hikari food are also easy to get & many hobbyist use them for the sake of convenience as they are available just at their neighbourhood aquarium store. So far haven't heard of any ill effect.

Hi Nico maybe you want to try them sometime. In momotaro farm they use sweet potatoes, pumpkin, tofu, etc too. Some hobbyists use refresh for calcium but I think tofu is more effective. Refresh will bring up my water GH & TDS level tofu won't.
Does hobbyists in Germany use salt in their pond? Some of our local guys do that but I don't because in my opinion if a certain level of salt is kept in the pond all the time then parasite & anerobic bacteria will start to build resistance to the salt level & it will become more diffcult to deal with when a problem break up in the pond.

From where did you get the tofu?
I have ssen it in our local supermarket, but it is expensiv, because it is "biofood".

Salt, yes an often discussed topic, but there isn't a trend or an majority on any side. Some koi keepers swear on it, others doesn't.

I've been using Hikari since 1988, at first I used to experiment with other foods and have tried most in that time. But about two years ago I decided to stop messing around and stick with Hikari.

Since the introduction of the Saki brands I have fed a mixture of Saki and Wheatgerm throughout the winter, introducing Excel in larger proportions from the spring over summer and decreasing by the autumn.

My last recorded incident of Koi pox was in 1996.
I began heating the pond in 1999.

I know Bil in the UK uses summer squash which more or less the same as pumpkin.

I don't know about the salt levels in tofu but I have heard this is a normal practice in the far east.

Just wondering...

In the wild, what do carp eat? Is there any merit in providing a full range of foods for Koi? Or are they like show dogs who do best when kept to a strict diet. From reading some of the posts, its sounds like they will eat anything you put in the pond...watch out for your fingers and toes....hahaha.

The trouble is that wildcarp and Nishikigoi are two very different animals even though they are the same family. The best comparison is the diet of koi in mud ponds.
Now listening to Brett you will hear that his fish, though feed pellets, extract alot of food from the pond itself. Crayfish, mayflies, beatles, plants, weeds and insect larve all form a major part of the fish's diet in the summer months while the fish are in the ponds. Mudpond live is, in general, a time of heavy and maximum growth in koi. But diet, while important, isn't the only factor.
