Your really getting pretty good growth on her. I think that's so important for an asagi which does not have much red to come into play with the pattern. I think that red on the face in either shusui or asagi can give personality to the koi but with asagi, their blue and net pattern is their basics and the bigger and nicer that is the better. She also looks like as she gets older her face will whiten. Hopefully once she finishes stretching you can get some volumn to her. With shusui again it's the scales that are bottom line important. They are the ones that run from behind the head to the tail. they should be so alligned and identical as to (in theory) match up like a zipper. Every once and a while you see one like that an marvel at the allignment. Keep her growing kiky, love to see her again at about 68-72 cms. her face and fukerin should be quite stunning.

I am also a stickler for scale pattern on Shusui. A Shusui must really be perfect in order for me to like them. I like a nice dark row down the dorsal, and equal balance of red on left and right. Here is a picture of some Yamajyu's tosai house..

Ok, sheild your eyse on these pictures. They are my mutts. The first koi I was one of the very first koi I purchased at WalMart 5 years ago. I sold it this year to my Indian friend. He says the scales look like Iraqi writing.

The second one is one from one of my yearly flock spawnings. I have sold it also.

The third one I got from Kloubecs as a tosai. It actually looked like a doisu kohaku when I got it. I was very surprized. Its now a Sansai. Keeping it for now, until I can afford to trade up later. Its got all the things I dont like, however this year when I bred it, I got a little asagi out of the mix.

The last one I like. However I saw ones like it in Japan in the "for dinner" ponds I'll hold on to it awhile longer. Something to be said for the purity of the blue.

Greg,

Were those last two pictures also taken at the 'tunnel place'? All look like Hirasawa Koi - dont think the tunnel survived the earthquake.

Yep, they were both at that place. Thanks for the name, i'll update my records.

Here is another koi I liked at that facility. An asagi with too much red, but the pattern is fantastic.

Wouldn`t the ki shusui be classified as a doitsu harawake or a ki kisui?

i have trouble telling a yellow ki kisui from a doitsu harawake, i think they can look the same but it is the parantage that actualty makes them different.

can anyone clarify?

A Ki Shusui will have the Blue dorsal scales while the Doitsu Hariwake will have perfect white scales along the back.

Thank-you Greg for the picture posting! Very interesting and enjoyable. Nothing more fun than sitting in front of hundreds of tosai and trying to picture them 3-4 years down the pike. I darsent ask Brian for anything for years after the Asagi edition, but I would love a selection article on shusui! Was talking to Arthur recently and he has me opening up my mind to a kosui ( kohaku-shusui cross )
I saw one several years ago that took a top award and had everyone talking at the seattle show.
