Hi Donald

I come from Malaysia which is in the equatorial region. We have hot weather year in and year out (and thunderstorms as well) and our water temperature is fairly constant at 28 degC. With this temperature we are able to feed our kois very aggressively within the constraints of our filter system.

Cute maids? I only find them cute if they have good white, hi or sumi!!!

My maid is only allowed to feed my kois and only very, very occasionally (when I am lazy) she is allowed to clean my filter.

Koi eating technique...

I have an ageing Asagi that was donated to me by my partner Tony before we got in business together. This male is slow approaching food but has a very unusual, although very successful, technique: it locates where the most pellets are then comes from under up to the surface, and slowly goes down (backwards) with its mouth wide open! A very effective vacuum effect.

Yep,
even my little guys are in various feeding patterns. One inparticular will come up at the very beginning and mid-water feed and then go to the bottom and try and forage off of it. others never leave the bottom. others stay at one or another level.
The long-fins are offensive feeders. often i put out the treats later in the feeding when the longfins are a little full and less active.

Dr Teh, beside feeding my koi, my 2 maids do the back flushing of the filter & 10-15% changing of water everyday. They have accesss to all my koi reading materials, dealers & internet. 1 of them got so interested in koi that I think she is better than me.
However, the measurement of water parameters I have to do it myself every other day & show them what it mean.
I think they'll reading this post too. Thanks ladies.

I have a friend who had a koi community of differing feeding habits. He had 1 chagoi and the rest gosanke variety. He feeds them good quality colour-enhancing (hence expensive?) koi food and who ate most of them? The chagoi of course. My friend actually had to use a cane to chase away the chagoi during feeding until he got so fed up that he gave her away eventually.

Swordfish, you are so lucky to have knowledgeable maids.

To me my filter is the heart of my system and it is not wise to let maids to meddle with matters of the heart?!

Dr Teh, I was reluctant to let my maids meddle with my filter initially but Alice(her name) prove to me that she is more than up to the job. She is a very detail person. She know that even the cheapest fish in the pond is easily 6 mnths of her monthly salary.
I test the water parameter every other day so any problem could be rectify quickly. A bit on the kia-su type.LOL.
