sinking food

I got a chance to pick up a couple of hikari wheat germ sinking today so i did. I see it so rarely in the states, that i couldn't refuse. It's not true wheat germ. if you read the label it lists shrimp meal and fish meal also. But it's a wonderful
food. I haven't fed it in about 15 years so was anxious to see how the gang responded. I think if they could talk, they would have said something like...wow dad,
why have you been feeding us barley when we coulda had this stuff?

you might be thinking why in God's green earth would anyone want to feed sinking. isn't floating food so you can see your koi?

my answer is that my sweetie is always so shy and the last one up to get any wheat germ that she hardly gets any. She was right there with the sinking!

was curious if anyone else had or does use sinking......

One time when I was at Tom Lansings we talked about sinking food. He said he liked it, but the food would go down the drain a lot of the time before the koi eat it. I would think sinking food would be great for a pond without good flow in it, but a pond with a lot of heavy flow, it might not be the best thing to feed.

I use it Dick....alternate some times to away from floating. Learned only to throw in enough at a time so it gets quickly picked up by the herd before getting to the bottom drains. Wait a few minutes throw some more in until I feed the desired amount. Where did ya get the sinking Hakari at?

Ah sinking food.. Very nice..

My Izeki paste sinks I really like it. But if you watch the fish its is much easier for them to eat as they swim ahead and snatch it out of the air so to speak instead of hang with there heads up pumping their gills.

Another good benefit is that you can spot feed the koi you are trying to bulk up just like your shy fish as the other fish are frenzied in the corner you can throw em her way and they sink right to her.

Like Joe, I don't feed sinking pellets but cooked shrimp and everything he says is true...

Am using a demand feeder with Yokozuna 46% protein food and they get enough to keep them happy, yet as soon as I drop in the shrimp, once/week they eat it right away and everyone gets their fair share... I follow Dans method of a little at a time so 100% gets to the koi...

If I could get sinking Yokozuna, I'd probablly get that....

My sinking has been Kani Ichiban and Izeki paste. Also feed floating Kani Ichiban. Mix it with other pellets, hikari whaeat germ, Ogata silk powder or Hi silk later on.

With the Izeki paste you guys add anything to it, or just feed it like it comes?

I mix different pellets, often sinking and floating are fed at the same time. Most of the koi prefer sinking food, but some show a preference for floating pellets ... sometimes a koi just does not like being part of the crowd.
